Aquatic Biomass Handling: Questions & Answers

What does Seaweed Solutions Group do?

SSG designs and integrates industrial-scale systems that collect, transfer, dewater and prepare seaweed and aquatic biomass for downstream use. We evaluate the material, collection method, volume and site, then engineer the pathway and integrate the right equipment.

How does wet biomass get to the dewatering system?

Either by high-solids hydraulic pumping, which moves wet biomass and slurry continuously from vessels, containment or receiving areas, or by conveyor and bulk transfer from trucks, loaders or hoppers. SSG does not require one specific feed architecture.

What does a screw press do?

An industrial continuous screw press separates excess liquid from wet biomass mechanically, with no thermal drying or chemical additives. It produces dewatered biomass — the higher-solids material remaining after mechanical dewatering — and a liquid fraction.

How much water can be removed?

In our June 2024 trial on Florida sargassum, about 60% of incoming weight separated as liquid, and the dewatered biomass reached about 35% solids from 20%. Results vary with the material and configuration, so project-specific performance is established by field demonstration.

What happens to the dewatered biomass and the liquid?

SSG prepares both streams for what comes next. Dewatered biomass can go to drying, storage or downstream processing; the liquid is directed to treatment, reuse or further processing according to independent characterization and local regulations.

Does SSG manufacture end products like fertilizer or bioplastics?

No. SSG enables downstream processing. We solve the material-handling, transfer, dewatering and separation steps so that processors, researchers and product developers can pursue their applications.

Which materials does SSG work with?

Sargassum, kelp and other seaweeds, and aquatic biomass such as water hyacinth and hydrilla. The same engineered approach applies across materials.

Can systems be mobile?

Yes. Systems can be skid- or trailer-mounted for seasonal or remote sites, or installed as stationary lines at regional processing hubs.

How do we start?

Tell us what you're collecting, how much you're handling and what needs to happen next. We'll help determine the transfer, dewatering and material-handling configuration, and can propose a field demonstration.
