Kodiak, Alaska: Seaweed Processing Demonstration Event

We supported GreenWave's kelp processing and stabilization workshop for Alaska kelp farmers with equipment and technical expertise.

Kodiak, Alaska: Seaweed Processing Demonstration Event

Important groups: GreenWave, Macro Oceans, Alaska Marine Cluster, Alaska Seaweed Cultivators.

Overview. SSG, together with Vincent Corporation, provided technical support on site for a workshop organized by GreenWave.

Background. Fresh seaweed degrades quickly after harvest, making it hard for farmers and processors to reach market with enough quality product. GreenWave, Macro Oceans and industry groups are developing an open-source primary processing line that stabilizes kelp at ambient temperature as close to the farm as possible, so remote Alaskan farms can extend shelf life and reach markets. SSG is providing equipment and technical expertise.

Summary. The May 23 workshop at the Kodiak Fisheries Research Center drew over a dozen kelp farmers from across Alaska. Macro Oceans demonstrated chemical stabilization methods for freshly harvested seaweed, and attendees worked hands-on with Vincent equipment. Within a month, technical and equipment requests were being fulfilled to process over 10,000 kg of fresh kelp.

Key takeaways

  • Attendees valued practical help with harvest, processing and stabilization, and want better information on commercialization.
  • There is a clear gap between the ability to grow and store seaweed and the ability to find distribution and markets.
  • SSG will keep sharing the best available information to help these groups.
